How Whale VomitCould
Make You Rich

You read that right, whale vomit can indeed make you rich. More specifically it is intestinal slurry and only from Sperm Whales.

It is known as Ambergris it is one of the most valuable raw and rare products on Earth, it gets used in many high-end perfumes and fragrances as it makes the scent last longer on the skin.

Recently some fishermen from Oman struck "floating gold" after finding 60 kilos (nine and a half stone) of the stuff - it was worth an estimated life-changing £2,000,000.

I can almost hear you thinking that a fisherman would be in his boat bobbing about in the sea which is where you are most likely to find any, so what chance do I have of finding any....?

Well in 2016 a couple from Morecambe in the UK were taking a walk on a beach and notice a funny smell, they realised it was coming from a 'rock' but it felt waxy like a candle and gave a smell like rotting fish.

As they had read a story in the Local Paper about Ambergris they hoped they might be on to something. It turned out they were and they were £50,000 richer for the 3lb find.

The story they had read about was about another Morecambe resident who found fame in 2013 when he discovered a lump of the smelly rock on a beach.

He was offered £50,000 for the find but was advised it could be worth double that so sent a sample for more testing and proper valuation, it was then discovered that his find was in fact a worthless lump of fat.

Smaller deposits have been washed up all over the UK so please don't rush to Morecambe (although it is a lovely place to visit) and it is pure luck to find any.

The photo above was taken by Martin Gray and originally in this tweet, he said it is only the second time he has found any in 40+ years of beachcombing. Both finds were small and stone-like, lying on top of seaweed - he also remarks about the smell saying it was "like the very essence of decomposition".

On a slightly unrelated note, I urge you to look through Martin's Twitter posts to see some of the effects of litter washed up on the beautiful beaches in the Orkney Islands.

If you are interested in finding out more information please read Christopher Kemp's excellent book Floating Gold: A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Ambergris

But if you do manage to find any Ambergris, remember it was me that told you about it!

(please note in several places around the world it is actually illegal to own, sell or buy Ambergis - not in 2018 in the UK though)
